Recreational Team

About Rec Team

Rec Team is a program designed for kids ages 7 to 13 of all skill levels. Whether your child has been bouldering for years or has never stepped onto a crash pad before, there is a place for them on our team.

It is a non-competitive climbing team for kids interested in improving their bouldering skills in a fun, pressure-free, and supportive environment. Our coaches focus on fundamental technique, body movement, strength building, safe falling habits, and problem-solving through engaging climbing games, team-building activities, and trust exercises.

Along the way, kids build valuable life skills like focus, communication, confidence, and teamwork. Rec Team also serves as a great bridge for any child interested in eventually entering the world of competitive bouldering.

A Rec Team membership includes dedicated practice sessions with our coaches, as well as full access to come boulder at Crux Houston anytime during standard business hours!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I’ve signed up my child—now what do I do?

A: You’re all set! Just show up a few minutes early for the first session to ensure your child’s paperwork, payment, and waiver are up to date. Our front desk staff will help get them fitted for climbing shoes. From there, our youth coaches will meet your child and introduce them to the program!

Q: Do I need to purchase climbing gear for my child?

A: No! Crux provides all rental gear for free as part of the Rec Team membership. If your child wants to get their own equipment, we sell shoes and gear in our shop, but purchasing gear is never required.

Q: Can my child attend other practice sessions, or do we need to stick to the scheduled time?

A: Your child will need to stick with the specific session time you originally signed up for.

Q: Can my child come climb outside of scheduled practice times?

A: Yes! A Rec Team membership grants full gym access during our regular business hours, allowing your child to practice and boulder anytime under adult supervision.

Q: Are practices mandatory?

A: Practices are optional. We encourage team members to attend as many sessions as possible to get the most out of the program, but we completely understand if they need to miss a practice on occasion.

Q: My child has never climbed before. Is this a good program for beginners?

A: Absolutely! Rec Team is designed for all skill levels. Our coaches work with each child to help them progress based on their current abilities.

Rec Team Outdoor Climbing Trips

Crux is thrilled to offer our young climbers the opportunity to take the skills they’ve honed in the gym and apply them to real rock outdoors!

As our Houston location grows, we will be joining our sister gyms for combined outdoor climbing adventures. These trips bring together recreational and competitive teams from all four Crux locations, creating a vibrant community experience where team members can connect, climb, and support one another on real rock.

All outdoor trips are guided and supervised by our experienced Crux climbing staff, and parents are always welcome to join as chaperones!

Please note: Space is limited for outdoor trips, and ticket registration is required to attend. If you have any questions regarding upcoming outdoor trips, please contact Jordan Dawson at jordan@cruxclimbingcenter.com.
