Welcome to Crux Climbing Center! From experienced climbers to Houstonians looking for a new workout option, Crux has something for everyone. This newest addition in Houston is stocked with bouldering, strength training areas, a yoga studio, locker rooms with saunas, a kids’ area, climbing gear retail and a lounge space.
Crux is designed to be much more than a gym—it’s a place where you can form a community. We heard the call from our friends in Houston to build a facility for them – a place with training boards, high quality spray wall, saunas, and plenty of A/C. Taking many elements members fell in love with, like the lounge space that gives you a great place to hang out with old friends or meet new ones after your workout. Friendly staff is always on hand to answer questions or help you out if you get stuck. We will have social events ranging from small, intimate community gatherings to huge fun celebrations all year long.
We’re excited to be a part of this Houston neighborhood, and we hope you’ll enjoy the atmosphere that we’ve built for you.
About The Plant
In a nod to the nearby Coffee Plant/Second Ward Station on the METRORail Green Line, which services the East End area, The Plant in Second Ward represents the first real estate redevelopment of its kind in Houston to embrace the notion of walkable urbanism by connecting the light rails to the bayou trails in one of the most car-dependent cities in the world.
Concept Neighborhood’s vision for The Plant in Second Ward includes 250,000 square feet of authentic retail, and creative office/urban maker space along with more than 1,000 multifamily units designed for a mix of market-rate, workforce housing. Initial plans include multiple residential housing developments with 80 to 140 small studio apartments spread over a series of 3- to 4-story buildings centered around community-focused courtyards. Additionally, the Houston-based investor group aims to use retail as a form of placemaking by repurposing most of the industrial warehouses it has acquired into hyperlocal retail spaces that reflect the rich culture and diversity of the Second Ward.
Mission
To build a premier hub where Central Texas climbers could not only perfect their craft, but to create a space where they could gather as a community, learning from and teaching one another.
Starting in South Austin in 2016, Crux built a 22,000 sqft rope and bouldering gym to serve local climbers and host community events.
Austin came calling again to add a N. Central location. Crux found the perfect location in the Highland neighborhood. Opening in 2020, this facility was bouldering only but added in more fitness space and saunas.
Then in 2024, Crux opened its first ground-up project. Stretching to new heights of 58′ tall rope climbing, and expanding the size of all programming, Crux added in a 30,000+ sqft facility to Pflugerville, TX. With this addition, Crux explored work-remote pods, speed climbing walls, crack climbing walls, and a bigger kids room than ever before.
In 2026, Crux will be opening its first Houston location. The call of the community plus a return to hometown for owner, Kevin, led Crux to call Houston home to its fourth location.
One of the best things about having local owners is accessibility. Crux isn’t a big-box gym, so the staff actually hears what you have to say. Feedback is always welcome and is taken seriously, and you’re encouraged to let us know what you think about your new climbing home.
